Better Together Café at Hayden Village

Starting September 26, 2024, the lunch program at the Hayden Village Center in Franklin took on a new name, Better Together Café, and a new purpose: pairing a hot meal with social interaction, activities, and guest speakers rather than food alone.

"Social isolation is a growing challenge for seniors," Senior Services' chief executive officer said. "Our Better Together Café aims to address that. When we help older adults engage with each other and the community, we all benefit."

Hayden Village Center is a renovation of the historic Hayden High School building, open since 2020 with affordable senior apartments alongside a community center open to the public: a gymnasium with basketball and pickleball courts, a game room, a computer lab, a conference room, and a community garden.

One senior who has attended Hayden's programs for years said the group setting is part of what keeps her coming back: "It's easier to be active when you do it with a group than on your own. You get more joy. People joke and laugh. They encourage you, and you encourage them."

Hayden's director said fewer people realize the community center is open to residents of all ages, not just those who come for meals. "This is a hidden gem in our community," she said. "I want people to know that we are here to serve everyone." The center's gym, conference room, commercial kitchen, and activity rooms are also available to book for events; Hayden has hosted family reunions, birthday parties, and anniversary celebrations.
